History of St. Andrew’s School, Paranaque City
A Belgian Priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Van Runckelen – a member of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (C1CM) Missionaries, became Parish Priest of St. Andrew Parish of Paranaque In October 1915, he founded St. Andrew School (SAS) on June 27, 1917. The funds came from the people of Belgium who donated and helped in putting up the Elementary School. In 1932, Fr. Joseph founded the High School Department.
The school maintained its co-educational status up to the outbreak of World War II. The school , reopened SY 1945-1946 with only the first year class exclusively for boys. The establishment of St Paul’s College of Paranaque, a Catholic school for girls, just a stone’s throw away from SAS, caused the school to be henceforth a school exclusively for boys. In 2004, SAS brought back its co- educational status.
In 2002, Pope John Paul II created the new Diocese of Parafiaque, an offshoot of the Archdiocese of Manila. He appointed Bishop Jesse E. Mercado, D.O., an Auxiliary Bishop of Manila, to become the first bishop of the diocese. Father Rolando R. Agustin is now school Director.
As a 93-year old seat of learning, SAS has become an academic institution in Paranaque. In 2006, it was awarded Most Outstanding Catholic School for Boys by the Philippine Marketing Excellency Awards.
